Hapgood is a "thought experiment" that raises the important issue of Stoppard's questioning of the classical "laws of thought." Quantum mechanics and the wave-particle theory of light become in this play a metaphor for the impossibility of any kind of objective reality. By relating the duality of light in quantum mechanics to the duality about people and the propositions they hold, Stoppard focuses his concerns on questioning inherited notions of order, causality, and certainty. According to Stoppard, these ideas represent a construct of epistemological fantasy that results from a Newtonian view of not only physical or human behavior, but also the universe. Central to the inquiry is the desire to demystify the epistemological heritage of Newtonian physics. By divesting us of certainty, he undermines in his play the classical "laws of thought"that capture in the linear mode of "either-or" the mysteries of human identity and the even greater intricacies of the universe. Stoppard affirms that, though reality seen through our lens is ambiguous, this ambiguity offers us a new possibility of understanding randomness and probability as the reality of our world. His affirmation of uncertainties produces an arc of development that moves from a critique of the construct of objective reality to a celebration of the possibilities for imaginative freedom.
