Tom Stoppard attempted to use various scientific theories as some of the important ideas he likes to play with in his plays. His first attempt was Hapgood first produced in London in 1988: he joined the quantum mechanics and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle with the spy thriller story. His second attempt was Arcadia in which he uses chaos theory, the second law of thermodynamics, entropy, etc.: this was hailed with enthusiasm when it opened in London in 1993. Even though the earlier play was not as popular as the latter play among the playgoers, it was well received after Arcadia's great success.
In Hapgood Stoppard has successfully combined the never ending espionage games between the West and Russia during the cold war era with the uncertain world of subatomic particles by making one of his characters a famous physicist. From the outset, Hapgood is perplexing because there are double agents, identical twins, identical briefcases, etc. Therefore audience is never sure who is the defector or which one is one's real self. Kerner, the Russian spy and scientist who supposedly defected to England and working under the British intelligence officer Mrs. Hapgood, says that the ever-shifting identities and allegiances of spies have a parallel world in the world of electrons. However, Stoppard's ultimate aim is to reveal the duality of human nature: he thought that quantum mechanics suggested itself as a powerful metaphor for human behaviour.
If there is nothing definite and certain in the world of Hapgood, then Stoppard's view of the universe seems absurd and meaningless. But as one critic has pointed out and Stoppard himself mentioned, the title suggests "Perhaps-good". This kind of hope comes from the fact that Hapgood decides at the end of the play to abandon a career with a code name of "Mother" which sees human beings only in terms of instrumental worth and to go back to her son as a "mother". Hapgood has proved again that Tom Stoppard is one of the most outstanding intellectual playwrights of out time.
