This essay discusses the 8<SUP>th</SUP>-century Byzantine Counter-Iconoclasm, which became the precedent of the 16<SUP>th</SUP>-century Catholic Reformation, and the reaction of the contemporary Western Holy Roman Empire to the former. The Western theologians under the aegis of Emperor Charlemagne in principle opposed the use of icon and took the side of the Byzantine Iconoclasts. This was largely motivated by political rather than theological reasons and the Western theologians did not even understand correctly the theories of Byzantine Iconophiles. Eventually, however, Western theology developed towards the acknowledgment and reiteration of the use of icon as time passed by to the late Gothic period. When the 16<SUP>th</SUP>-century Reformation and Iconoclasm took place in the Western territory, Catholic theologians relied heavily on the theories of the Byzantine Iconophiles to support and defend the long tradition of image use in the Church. To simplify the point, the iconoclastic theory of the Holy Roman Empire, by pure chance, continued and was inherited by the Reformers and the Byzantine Iconophilism by the Catholics in the 16<SUP>th</SUP> century. It indeed was a historical irony that the Holy Roman Empire, claimed as the defender of the Church and traditional faith, set up a precedent for the later generation who opposed and challenged the tradition of the Catholic church. Of course the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16<SUP>th</SUP> century took the side of the Catholic church and opposed the Reformer’s Iconoclasm.
