This paper illuminates the nature and change of Wittenberg Iconoclasm in the sixteenth century, Especially from a political point of view, it examines the characteristic of Wittenberg Iconoclasm.
Acts of violence against images took place in December of 1521 and January of 1522 in Wittenberg, So called, Wittenberg Iconoclasm formed a part of the Reformation. Moreover it meant conflicts of Luther and Karlstadt. It said Luther and Karlstadt's difference of image view stems from theological views. But there was another reasons. This paper suggests Wittenberg Iconoclasm depended on role politics. Either Luther or Karlstadt tried to gain support from Saxen princes. Especially, anticlericalism was a distinctive feature of the Image Controversy in Wittenberg. It cuts a conspicuous figure to Karlstadt. He attacked images and idolatrous priests. It caused Wittenberger to disturb public order. Saxen princes did not want to disturb public order. With this reason they raised Luther's hand. Thenceforth. Luther had the leadership in the Reformation.
On the one hand, Wittenberg Iconoclasm gave a clue that led to weakening a symbol to Protestant reforms. In addition, Wittenberg Image Controversy was movement for the people. In other words, Whether Karlstadt advocated iconoclasm or Luther did anti-iconoclasm, they made possible effort to help people who were suppressed by church or princes.
