This paper explores aspects of the cognitive working of such feelings as ‘anger’, ‘fear’, ‘sadness’, and ‘joy’, according to cognitive models. These are shared, organized and idealized mental models through which members of a language community cognize meanings and communicate with each other. The results of investigation into the cognitive working of emotion are as follows.
Firstly, ‘anger’ has a lot of conceptual constructions. The ‘prototypical scenario of anger’ consists of “the cause of anger → the occurrence of anger → the attempt to pent up anger → the inability to pent up anger → the avenging action of anger.” ‘The occurrence of anger’ is the most important stage in which physiological metonymy works. Korean novels such as The Water Mill and Camellia Flowers are typical texts in which this scenario of anger is exemplified.
Secondly, ‘fear’ also has many conceptual constructions. The Korean cognitive model of ‘fear’ comprises the ‘freeze’ model and the ‘escape’ model. The freeze model consists of “the cause of fear → the occurrence of fear → the freezing action of fear.” The escape model is composed of “the cause of fear→ the occurrence of fear → the attempt to control fear → the inability to control fear → the escaping action of fear.” These stages are significant in that the physiological metonymy works in the occurrence of fear, and the action has a subconscious effect on our ways of thinking and our activities.
Thirdly, the conflicting aspects of ‘joy’ and ‘sadness’, based on their physical manifestations, are represented at the linguistic level as follows. ‘Sadness’ is revealed as “down, heaviness, darkness, languishing, the falling of body heat, and closing”, whereas ‘joy’ is shown as “up, lightness, brightness, liveliness, the rising of body heat, and opening”. These conflicting properties are identified in the image schemas of users of the same language.
