In the elementary Korean textbook, usually the educational contents for literacy(rather than listening and speaking) has been presented. In order to elucidate the substantial elementary literacy during National Curriculum period, I had to focus on the educational contents for reading and writing. So I decided to examine the media-identifying contents. Clearly, there has been something emphasized in the stage of the 1st year. Now it is time to reconsider its educational validity in that not a word has been discussed about it up to now.
In this thesis ‘the media-identifying contents’ are defined like this: the educational contents finally aimed at recognizing the relationship among ‘picture-letter’, ‘picture-language’ and ‘text-speech’. The common characteristic of them is the symbolic feature of language.
There are two kinds of ‘media-identifying contents’ in 1st year Korean textbooks. One is the activity of conventional writing system, aimed at the traditional literacy. That is about the relationship between text and speech. The other is captured by reading the various role of picture. That is our future literacy, and also should be theoretically reflected from now on.
Many people usually consent with the multi-literacy as a future blueprint of Korean Education. And every student has to lay the foundation of literacy from the 1st year of elementary school. The media-identifying contents have to be concerned not only with the conventional writing system but also with the various multimodal text. That is because those are the social-cultural needs. And moreover, those are identical with cognitive - linguistic experiences.
