The purpose of this paper is to have a comparative dialogue between the Shamanic concept of spirit and Christian idea of the Holy Spirit. Korean Shamanism has an ambivalent position within the Korean cultural system. Although a lot of Korean people have accepted shaman's consultation, they have constantly shown certain type of prejudice against shamanism. This kind of cultural discrepancy has been occurred with a negative description of shamanism. Korean shamanism has often been stigmatized and despised as superstition. Nevertheless, the shamanic tradition and its cultural practice have continued to develop and serve people with the power of shamanic healing. Shamanic elements are deeply embedded in Christian tradition. One can find ample examples of shamanic elements of Christianity such as exorcism, prophecy, divination, and mystical and supernatural experience of the prophets. Shamanism is not a totally foreign tradition to Christians, and yet the religious suspicion and age-old taboo against it have strongly existed in a Korean society. The major motivation of this paper is to reexamine such a contradictory perception of the shamanism through a mutual dialogue with Christianity, highlighting differences and similarities between the traditions. The causality, ontological structure, epistemology, and eschatology of the spirits and the Spirit shall be dialogically discussed. As a conclusion of this paper is that the shamanic concept of spirit is also congruent with the notion of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it is important for Korean Christians to search for their own formation of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in dialogue with shamanic spirits.

본 논문은 무교와 기독교 전통에 나타난 영 (靈) 개념을 중심으로 종교 철학적 대화를 시도하는 글이다. 범신적인 영 개념을 중심으로 발전한 무교의 신령론과 유일신 중심의 성령론과의 대화를 통하여 철학적 유사점과 차이점을 살펴본다. 무교의 신령론은 자연신령과 함께 인간의 생령과 사령이 주축이 되며 현세와 내세가 존재론 적으로는 구분되지만 영의 기능적인 면에서는 활동 영역이 특별히 구분되지 않는 특징이 있다. 무교에서 사령은 다시 조상령과 원령으로 나누어지는데 이는 이생에서 어떠한 삶을 살다 죽었는가에 따라 그 영의 존재구조가 결정되어진다. 무교의 신령론은 다분히 인간중심적이면서 현세적인 영 개념이 강하다. 반면에 기독교의 성령은 내세적인 성격이 강조되는 종말론적인 형태를 가진다. 신의 영은 인간과 다른 자연의 영과는 존재론적으로 분명하게 구별이 되며 영의 존재 여부가 신의 뜻에 따라 기능하다 소멸하게 되는 다분히 신중심적인 (theocentric) 결정론의 형태를 가진다. 무교의 신령론은 한 맺혀 죽어간 원혼들을 종교적 타부의 대상으로 삼지 않고 오히려 종교의 대상으로 삼는 恨중심적 관점을 가지고 있다. 반면 기독교의 성령론은 다른 영의 존재들과 엄격히 구분함으로서 영의 聖俗論을 형성한다. 따라서, 비기독교적인 영은 세속적인 영으로 신의 성령과는 근본적인 차이를 가진다고 본다. 위와 같은 종교간의 대화는 서구 문화 제국주의가 강화되는 시기에 자문화의 가치를 재확인하여 보면서 기독교가 지니고 있는 배타적인 성격을 철학적 대화를 통하여 희석시켜 보고자 하는 목적을 가지고 있다. 또한 무교와 기독교의 대화를 통하여 토착화된 한국적 성령론의 가능성도 모색하여 보고자 한다.
