Jiknyeoseong is a novel which describes an intellectual vanity and a dissoluteness of young people swept away by a wave of modern. Also, this novel is a history of honor and contempt of Yun Ja-jak household and Lee Han-rim household. Yun Ja-jak who becomes a colonial novel, jumping into the troublous times and with Chosun's fall and Lee Han-rim who returns home, leaving the troublous times behind, they are friends. This novel is derived from the marriage between the two family. Futhermore, this novel describes very realistically surroundings doomed to ruin through family troubles caused by the young people of this family. Through the ruin of the family, the writer gives salience to, Old Woman, Lee In-suk as an future-orienting person who was a victim by an anachronistic custom. In this respect, this novel is not only the novel of history of Old Woman, Lee In-suk but also a Bildungsroman of a woman.
The two families in Jiknyeoseong shows definitely the method of coping with the situation and the inevitable falling of the ruling class at the end of Korean Empire. In respect that such showings are closely related with the writer's autobiographical experience, this novel is worth of notice. This novel uncovers a life of debauchery of the colonial upper class's young people. It shows also the deep inside of the youth and the hypocritical lives of aristocratic family which can be described by only the writer's autobiographical experience. Such facts can be considered with the writer's autobiographical confessions.
