The purpose of this article is to suggest a direction of theological education for church renewal. The current church requests that our theological schools should teach skills that can be immediately applied in the filed. According to the analysis of the curriculum of the postgraduate school of theology at Hanshin University from 2000 to 2006, our school seems to attach more importance to an academic education than a practical one. If the primary purpose of our theological school is to foster minis trial candidates, the curriculum for theological education should be practical to meet the needs of church fields. However, teaching courses on practical theology is not enough to train ministrial candidates. Especially, the fields of christian education seem to emphasize social education rather than church education which is most needed for the theological student. Christian ethics, systematic theology and church history need to systematize their curricula in relation to practical theology. Moreover, the curriculum of the internship of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea seems to be ineffective.
Theological education for church renewal cannot be an education focused on teaching ministrial skills needed by the church. Even so, theological education remains in the arena of theoretical academic research. Theological education with the purpose to teach “immeadiately appliable” “ministrial skills for church practice cannot develop into education for church renewal. Practical theology education including education in other fields of theology should be changed. Wholistic theological education must not be a one-size-fits-all education applied to all churches. Just as theology is the discipline responsible for guiding and leading the direction of the church, theological education should also take firm root as a guide of church. That is why church renewal depends on the reform of theological education. The educational reform of practical theology is especially urgent for church renewal to take place.
