The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of aerobic and resistance training on self-esteem and mental health in chronic stroke patients. The chronic stroke patients who were participating the program from two different senior welfare centers were volunteered in the study. Subjects were divided into two groups, one(men: 7, women: 6) is participated in the aerobic and strength training program(exercise group) and the other(men: 3, women: 5) is participated in the aerobic program(control group). We used the Self-Esteem Scale(10 items) which is developed by Rosenberg(1965), modified and interpreted into Likert style(4 scales) by Kim GB et al.,(2000). We also used the BSI(The Brief Symptom Inventory: 53 items) developed by Derogatis et al.,(1976), normalized and interpreted by Kim JH & Kim GI(1984). The tests were analyzed with using the repeated measure of two-way ANOVA. The self-esteem in both exercise and control group was decreased after completed the 10 weeks of training. Significant difference was found for the self-esteem in group, but the self-esteem did not show any significant difference in time(pre and post training) and interaction effect between group and time. The mental health in both exercise and control group was decreased after 10 weeks of training program. The mental health showed significant difference in group and time. We determined that the subjects were participated in the training program with comfortable state of mind, they might recognize the importance of training program and a program leader.
