From a conversation-analytic perspective, this paper examines how nun is sequentially positioned and how the referent it marks is tied to the surrounding context. Systematic attention is paid to how the use of nun creates a cohesive tie with the prior context of action as well as with the prior mention of a referent. The nun-marked referent functions to evoke a membership category (Sacks 1972), the relevance of which is explicated with reference to the category-bound activity described in its predicate. The action thus constituted is formulated as the discourse upshot to be co-oriented by the hearer as having some bearing upon the preceding context. This interactional process is proposed as a methodic procedure underlying the use of nun that accounts for various functional and sequential features of nun, which include projecting an extended turn, framing/marking background segments of discourse, displaying affect, and mitigating dispreferred responses.
