This study compares the first- and second-person pronominal reference usage between the original Korean text and its English translated counterpart. The focus is on the poems included in the Nightingale (1948) anthology. The analysis shows four different tendencies in which the pronouns are treated by the translated text in relation to the original text: pronoun addition by the translated text, one-to-one corresponding pronominal usage between the two texts, non-corresponding pronominal usage between the two texts, and pronoun omission by the translated text. Furthermore, within each tendency, the translators motivation for making the certain decisions is discussed from either the syntactic or pragmatic perspectives. Such study gives insight not only into the differences between the Korean and English languages but also into the process of translating Korean into English.
