The objective of our research is to study the effects self-esteem improvement have on children from broken homes and how effective the method is in improving the interpersonal relationship skills of these children.
In order to carry out our research, we analyzed previous methods such as the "Self-esteem improvement program" by [o Won Seung (1996) and "Effect of Confidence Improvement Program on Children from Broken Homes" by Hwang Keung Hee (2000) and reconstructed the program to suit the perception and psychological level of children from broken homes. Then we carried out 12 studies, spanning a period of 3 months, on 10 children (six 5th grader, four 6th grader) in order to obtain our results.
As for our measuring standard for self-esteem, we used the research examination paper drawn up by Kong Tae Su (1998) which itself is a reconstructed version of the Children Self-esteem Examination paper created by Coopersmith. (1967)
For measuring the personal relationship skills of the children, we used Moon Sun Mo's (1980) personal relationship measuring scale which was an adaption of Guemey's (1977) Relationship Variation Scale made to suit the domestic situation.
Based on our study, we came up with the following conclusions:
First, the self-esteem improvement program that had been carried out on children from broken homes for a certain period of time was effective in raising the low self-esteem of the children.
Second, once their self-esteem had been raised, the children from broken homes also got along better with other children of similar age. In other words, their interpersonal relationship skills had improved.
Therefore it can be concluded that the self-esteem improvement program used in our study was effective in raising the self-confidence of children from broken homes and this in order, improved their relationship with other children within their surrounding.
