The rise of the modern science and the cutting edge technology in the 19th century could not expel the pseudoscience. Rather, it gained the popularity in America. Hawthorne was a contemporary with both sciences and he had an ambivalent feeling about them. The materialistic side of the rational civilization was disgusting for him, but he also hated skeptical issues that lied in the pseudoscience. This feeling of Hawthorne is reflected in his works and the insane protagonists such as Chillingworth, Holgrave, Aylmer, and Rappaccini symbolize both sciences.
Not a few scholar has paid attentions to the Hawthorne’s interest in it. Considering that alchemy has been presenting as an undercurrent in Western culture, those insane scientists in Hawthorne’s works are descendants of the alchemist in the Middle Ages. Hawthorne regenerated the alchemical idea and applied it in his works. He provided a warning to the readers by contrasting the new technology and the old one.
