Dostoevskys critics have hotly debated the Epilogues relevance to the main body of Crime and Punishment. While some question its thematic or structural connection to the preceding chapters, others view it as an integral part of the novel. Indeed if the novel is read as a narrative of the protagonists moral, psychological, and spiritual disintegration, then the Epilogue. in which the process of his reintegration and restoration begins to takes place, is both logical and aesthetically pleasing.
In keeping with this positive interpretation of the Epilogue, this article examines it from the perspective of numerological symbolism and shows that it, like the rest of the novel, incorporates a semiological system based on a particular reading of particular numbers and symbols of resurrection. The number 9 plays a crucial role in bringing together in the Epilogue the various symbolic sequences scattered throughout the text of the novel, especially those that stand for spiritual gestation and rebirth. The number 9 underpins the novels internal chronology and functions as a leitmotif in various other forms and functions.
The murder takes place in June, the hottest and most malodorous month of the year in St. Petersburg. Dostoevsky needed to space out the events in the plot into three nine-month periods, Raskolnikov's resurrection occurring on Easter. However, since these times do not line up the way he needed them to, he had to sacrifice chronological precision for the sake of symbolism. In other words, Dostoevsky expands the chronology to fit the numerology. At the beginning of the Epilogue, the reader is told that nine months have passed since Raskolnikov's trial, so his resurrection should have taken place in December, not Easter. Therefore Dostoevsky assumes, but does not textualize, a gap of 3-4 months.
