Chekhov is one of the greatest writers of the Russian realist literature. In his short stories he had a great emphasis on man's daily life. Especially, he wrote many short stories about child. In his fairy tales many poor children play a very important role. In this study we observe an image of child in Chekhov's fairy tales.
Chekhov's child is very located in very poor and pitiable condition. His children have the same feature.
First, they are often thrashed. They are so weak that they cannot avoid this whipping.
Second, his child early becomes an adult. He very well knows an adult's world.
Third, they live a tragic lives. A heroine of his fairy tales killed the baby, whom she took care of. But she doesn't even know what she has done.
Forth, the adult, who had heavily cruelly treated the child, on the contrary, wants to be the child. He has no way to escape. Now he want a new way. An old famous scholar acts well toward the young man, who works as a copyist for him. The scholar wants to go back his own childhood through his copyist's youth.
In conclusion, Chekhov doesn't present us only the tragic feature of child. He shows us the affirmative image, too. His heroes have a good point, that is an ability to understand the world surround him.
Through this affirmative image, Chekhov makes the reader awaken. He shows us how to take care the child, how to treat the week. Therefore, we can say that Chekhov wrote his fairy tales for us, for adults.
