The studies on the Korean leftist literature movements in the colonial period culminated in 1980s and '90s but, as we know, they cooled down rapidly in the 21st century. It used to be said that this change resulted from the falls of the socialist states in Eastern Europe.
But this phenomenon has many implications especially in the matter of stabilizing the scientific characteristics of literature study. Two facts are noticeable. One is the fact that the studies on the leftist literature were performed as an ideological practice in the instance of the academic movement, which was regarded as one element of the social movement. The other fact is that such patterns have made it hard to study them in the changed conditions of the 21st century.
So, to succeed the achievements of preceding studies and to develop newly the studies on the leftist literature movements, it is important to define the boundary line between theory and ideology. In other words, it is important to try to maintain firmly the scientific and theoretical character of snldies on modern Korean literature.
The major achievements of 1980~90's studies are as follows: (1) grasping the whole characteristics of leftist literature movements in the instance of positivism, (2) reestablishment of the totality of literature history, (3) enhancing the level of Korean literature study to the instance of the history thoughts (Geistes Historie], (4) developing the theory of realism and (5) methodological progress especially in the field of the analysis of novels' characters.
Though it is true that the heated atmosphere cooled down in the 21st century, we can find some noticeable studies. The peculiarities of these studies are as follows: (1) some changes in setting up the objects of study, (2) new trials trying to overcome the exhausting dichotomy of 'proletarian / nationalist', 'realism / modernism' etc. (3) enlarging the realm of study by means of new methodology such as leftist discourse theory or postcolonialism, (4) continuous studies on the writers in the context of the conversion to Japanese imperialism and (5) a few successive studies on the disciplines of theatre, music and art of KAPF.
The achievements of preceding studies on the leftist literature are precious but there are two matters, which have never been noticed significantly and now prevent further progress. One is the absence of critical distance between the researcher and the objects of study, especially the KAPF criticism. The other is the narrowness in setting up the objects of study.
These two are so correlated that one can say that they are two sides of the same coin. As a result of the incompetency of not keeping one's distance to objects of study (especially to the criticism) many researchers could not set up the whole leftist literature movements as the objects of study. The majority of studies accepted the logic and definition of KAPF criticism so that they have overlooked the gap between criticism and works and have made mistakes in analysing works. It can be said that relying on the KAPF criticism they have missed the real aspects of works.
This problematic condition results from the two matters above mentioned. So the way to overcome this problem is to solve the two matters. In this paper we call it methodological renewal or making methodology flexible.
First, we should not be arrested by one method which seems to be suitable for studying leftist literature. What is necessary is the general method that makes it possible to study properly not only leftist but also non-leftist literature. In fact this kind of method does not come from outside. It only can be induced from the (studies of) real aspects. So it can be said that a methodological attitude is needed to read the real object so as to lead to the method based on the real. As for the method to study literature, what is important is not the universal [European] derivation but the capability of explaining the real state. In this context this paper suggests not to adhere to the orthodox pure leftist method.
Second, it is necessary to set up the whole leftist literature movements as one object of study. Leftist literature movements including criticism, works and organization make a structure in which every element influences others and is influenced by others at the same time. Each is not only the cause but also the result of others. None of them can be the standard by which estimating others is suitable. So studying the leftist literature movements regarding the KAPF criticism as a standard cannot be justified. Instead we should set up all the leftist literature movements as the objects of study. In this case it will be possible to notice the gap between the criticism and the works and then to scrutinize the features that the gap made on both the criticism and the works.
