King Ch?ngjo was a first class scholar, exceptional in the Chosen dynasty. He felt deep regret over the contemporary learning which had detiorated into the political diatribes or merely theoretical games. Therefore he challenged 〈secularized learning〉. He prohibited unessential and impractical discusion about Classics, and reordered the Neo-Confucian system of learning which focused on inner self-discipline and public welfare. But his challenge was blocked for two reasons, one was the reaction of a conservative group of scholar-office, and the other was ironically his project itself. The former is easy to understand, but the latter needs some explanation. As Neo-Confucianism, basically, denounces natural desires and self-interset, it is hard to reconcile it with social policies based on the realization of individual desires and interests. He, as a statesman. stressed the public interest and military power, as opposed to Mencius who reproached King Hui of Liang for promoting national wealth and power. King Ch?ngjo felt that his own project could proceed beyond the scope of Neo-Confucianism, but, at the same time, he was reluctant to challenge Nee-Confucian Learning. In the final analysis. his reformation of learning resulted in incomplete success partly because of his reluctance, partly because of his early death. Nevertheless the dilemma he coped with is still with us, for example, we have to resolve the contemporary crisis in humanities caused by the gulf between the academic theory and reality in the street.
