The term "identity" Erikson uses encompasses an individual's self-identity as well as life's journey itself in which she endeavors to find the significance of life and her value of existence with multiple foci. The definition of human life consists of the incessant search for the meaning and purpose of one's being which are internalized by her significant others. These people bring her the essence of life, her vital force to live, moral values, and a series of mysterious and significant religious experiences.
This research, with hypotheses based on the Eriksonian notion of 'identity', is launched to survey interviewed materials and literature of adoptees, to comprehend their perceptions of their own struggles with identity, sense of loss, and nostalgia toward their biological parents, etc. and finally to evaluate them from a psychoanalytic point of view.
Adoption is a desirable method to provide an appropriate nurturing environment for children who could not otherwise be nurtured with parental care otherwise. However, there are many difficulties in the processes of identity development caused by the lack of consistencies between their root culture and their adopted culture, and there is also the remarkable difference of physical appearance between the adoptees and their family.
This writer has discovered, from the research, that in order for the adoptees to integrate inconsistencies between cultures in given circumstances to establish their identity, they must mature and develop. He also found that it is more helpful for the adoptees' identity development when they have experienced empathy and understanding from those around them, and have endeavored in a broadening of their own awareness of their root families and cultures.
