After Hideyoshi's invasion of Chosun in 1592 and following the establishment of diplomatic ties with Tokugawa Bakuhu. Chosun dispatched an envoy to Japan on twelve occasions.
During the Tokugawa era(1603~1868), Chosun envoy visited Japan for the last time in 1764. The next visit by Chosun envoy was to Tsushima in 1811.
The reign of Youngjo(1725~1876) saw friendly and stable trilateral relations among Chosun, Qing and Japan. As such. there were no significant conflicts between Japan and Chosun. In 1764. Chosun sent a team of envoys to Japan, as it was customarily done, to congratulate Iieharu who had succeeded General Tokugawa, Iieshige upon his death.
During the reign, however, two incidents took place. One was the spread of sweet potatoes which were grown in Tsushima and the other was the murder of Chosun envoy, Choi Chun Jong, by the Japanese interpreter Suzuki.
Spread of sweet potatoes to Chosun by the team of Chosun envoy in 1764 was indeed a remarkable achievement. The head of the group, Cho Eum, unlike the previous envoys, was a politician who had exceptionally rational mind. He carefully observed Japan's agricultural techniques and actively sought to introduce them to Chosun. Also, the murder of Choi Chun Jong, if ineptly dealt with, had potential to end the friendly ties between the two countries. But, with the capture of Suzuki who was the killer, there were no apparent problems which had resulted from the incident.
