In the Turgenev's novel, A Nest of Gentry, in which a line of love story is combined in a line of Slavophiles idea, the pursuit of happiness by Labretskij and Liza is conflicted with the crucial fate: the pursuit by Labretskij is conflicted with fatal hints and the pursuit by Lisa is conflicted by her own concept of happiness which is based on her religious belief, that is, God persecutes those who pursuit their happiness by themselves.
Turgenev resolves this conflict, suggesting a new way of life, that is, living for other people. While Labretskij, after losing his hope of personal happiness by the crucial fate, tries to live for other people, thus finds the meaning of his life, Lisa, after finding that she has sinned against God in pursuing her own happiness, decides to enter a convent in order to atone with the player not only for her own sin but also for others's sin, also finds the meaning of her life. In this way Turgenev express his own concept of the fate in A Nest of Gentry.
In order to suggest that human's destiny is under the crucial fate, Turgenev uses the direct speech of a character, meaning of a character's name, coincidental incident, parody of the Bible words, and also olfactory sensation. Turgenev also uses the symbol of book Symbols and Emblems and the direct speech of a character in order to suggest that there is another way of life which can give the meaning of life to those who experience of the failure in the pursuit of happiness under the crucial fate.
In this novel Turgenev shows his concept of fate that even though human being's life fails in having his own happiness under the crucial fate, he can get the meaning of life by selecting another way of life. Thus Turgenev suggests that the lofty way of life can save the human being who fails under the fate. In that, it might be possible for us to agree with the assertion by Gershenzon with ease that in this novel the fate functions as the tool which start the man living for others.
