The purposes of this study was to focus on changes of lyrics in the process of mass media transition as the Jabga Sushimga was released in the Phonograph album and to examine the patterns and meanings of those changes. The lyrics in the books of Jabga were the collection of popular songs in those days, which were based on the Seodo folk song Sushimga. However, it is also evident that there were major changes in text such as drastic omissions, selective rearrangement, random rearrangement, and borrowing of lyrics in the same song when comparing the books of Jabga Sushimga to those of Jeongjeongseungboshingugapga (『정정증보신구잡가』). While adopting the old Sushimga, they omitted and compressed them on the Phonograph album so that the songs could be completed in three minutes on the album. However, there were huge differences in addition to the same changing patterns in the books of Jabga, i.e., a couple of phrases from the old lyrics were inserted in the new ones on the Phonograph album, and also parts of different lyrics were put together in new lyrics. Those differences reflect an active movement to meet the needs of the general public in those days by putting together many different lyrics and re-arranging new ones in one song. In other words, the Phonograph album Sushimga was created in such a way that adopted the old familiar lyrics to make the listeners feel accustomed, lay out a foundation for commercial popularity and included new lyrics to meet the changing sensibility of people. The album’s text were organized in the “parody” technique of repetitions with differences, and the technique involved choosing lyrics of similar stories and using them to connect new ones as the same expressive method.
