Digital media uses at home is evolving very fast, warranting a more social scientific understanding of parental mediation of children’s media use. This study aims to examine how parental mediation among digital media varies according to the determinant variables and to suggest the guidelines for parents thereafter. As a result of the focus group interview with mothers, it is observed that types of parental mediation differ depending on the characteristics of digital media. The primary mediation types of digital media are surveillance mediation and restrictive mediation. At the same time, three distinct dimensions of mediation, such as restrictive mediation, instructive mediation, and co-viewing are found in the case of television. As for the computer, the non-mobile personal digital medium, restrictive surveillance mediation is prevalent. The result also highlights that the important determinants of the computer mediation include the location of computer at home, the gender of parent, occupation and digital literacy of mother. Children’s use of personal mobile media, such as mobile phone and MP3 player, is rather difficult to supervise, rendering a greater possibility of conflicts between parents and children. Thus, restrictive mediation accompanied with is predominant. Such difference accentuates the importance of discussing the mediation of mobile digital media use from a point of view different than that of non-mobile digital media use(e.g., co-viewing TV). Based on these results, the guidelines for parents are as follows; the Internet use for the family co-using media, active use of digital media as an effective family communication means between parents and children, parents’ deeper understanding of children’s specific culture of digital media use, regular media education for parents offered by schools and public agencies.
