Gender violenceis one of the most wide spread human rights abuses and public health problems in the world today. The study sought to discuss the portrayal of gender violence in four Tanzania daily newspapers published in the national language; Kiswahili. Four types of women violence; rape, wife battery, femicide, forced and child marriages were analysed. Among the reasons for gender violence are unequal power relation between men and women, jealousy, and negative beliefs about women in the society. The analysis revealed that, violence against women is gendered and can be understood in the context of gender inequality. The press has the vital role in promoting gender awareness in the community to change the public attitude towards women.
