This paper aims to investigate the meaning and origin of the place names in Bonghyeon-ri, Maengdong-myeon, Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. The details of the place-names in Bonghyeon-ri are as follows. First, the initial sound ‘G’ of ‘Gogae’ is often deleted in the intervocalic environment when ‘Gogae’ follows a monosyllabic front place-name element. Second, ‘Gal’ appears as a front place name element, which is supposed to originate from the Middle-Korean ‘Gara’ or ‘Garal’. Meanwhile, ‘Dodok’, a front place name element, is assumed to originate from Middle-Korean ‘Dudeulk’. Third, ‘Gol’, a back place name element is found in the valley names, while ‘Sil’ is found in the village names. And when the place name element occurs as a front place name element, ‘Ul’ appears. Fourth, ‘Mae’ and ‘Mi’ meaning a mountain in the middle Korean, are both place name elements, which are pure Korean vocabularies. Fifth, ‘Deul’ is used mainly as a back place name element in the field names, and ‘Gure’ and ‘Dae’ also appear in the field names. And in some cases, ‘Gure’ also happens to be a back place-name element in the valley names. Sixth, there exist a few dialects such as ‘Muling-i, Baegi, Bang-gu, Berak, Moting-i, and Bing-i’ in the place names of Bonghyeon-ri. We can find out a few pure Korean vocabularies in the place-names of Bonghyeon-ri. They are crucial for other related studies as well as the study of Korean language.
