Jeong Joo Seo’s academic record from Jool Po elementary school was recently discovered. During the period of dynamic change of Korean history, the elementary school in a small town in Korea lost its early academic records. However, these records were found in the National Archive in the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs.
This record of Seo is a significant resource in writing his biographical literature. The records include following: young boy’s physical growth, attendance, records from prior to the elementary school, academic transcripts, etc. Therefore, the large amount of the historic record of Seo’s childhood can be restored.
From 1924 to 1928, Jool Po Elementary school provided Seo with the new culture shock, training of public order and ethics, confidence of learning, and desire for writing. Seo’s excellent academic achievement became the root for him to survive through the Japanese colonial period, as an intellect. The fact that his profound literature ability was developed at this period is crucial in study of Seo’s life. Moreover, this actual record is valuable that it supports the credibility of his autobiography.
