Gim Hongsul became a powerful local gentry of Uiseong County standing by himself from Jinbo County at the end of Silla. He died in the battle against King Gyeongwon by standing with King Wang Geon. Thus, the residents in Uiseong County heartily remembered him, who protected the region and gave his loyalty to Goryeo dynasty. Driven by his descendants and influential locals in King Hyeonjong's reign, he was worshiped in a shrine as the god of castle. As Uiseong County was degraded as an administrative unit due to the reformation of local ruling system, residents appealed the recovery of status of Uiseong County by emphasizing the achievements of Gim Hongsul.
Since then, a sacrificial rite which praised Gim Hongsul as the god of castle was held until the latter period of the Joseon dynasty. At the time of Sukjong reign, there was a flow of change, in which the god of castle was perceived in a negative spirit and thus relegated so that the ideology of Confucianism was strengthened with political principles. With this change, residents in Uiseong County tried to alter the shrine of the god of castle into a Chungnyeol shrine and installed him there. This project was relatively belatedly driven by other dan leader. This was caused by the fall of his direct descendants, that is to say, it was the result of the social differentiation in which the rise and fall of each clique in the clan of Uiseong Gim happened. It was also caused by social change that yangban literati family who gained ascendancy over traditional natives of influence established a secure superior position in country.
