This paper aims to discuss the problems arising in the course of payment on the international transaction of digital goods and present alternatives.
Digital goods refer to all transactable items that include intangible goods electronically converted from conventional books and CDs, as well as software and digital contents electronically produced from the start. Digital goods have already been widely transacted in the real world and they are expected to gradually gain more weight in world trade as shown by the status of international transactions of digital goods.
Next, in reviewing the payment systems used in the international transactions of digital goods, it was verified that Telegraphic Transfer (T/T) and Letter of Credit (L/c) are the most frequently used. Based on this, it is reviewed whether the T/T and L/C are appropriate for the international transaction of digital goods or whether there are alternatives for companies to use in addition to these systems.
As a result of the review, it is concluded the conventional T/T and L/C are not appropriate as payment systems in the international transactions of digital goods, and this paper presents alternatives such as Escrow, combination of T/T with Stand-by credit and other systems, in which a bank acts as a carrier and exporters can use export insurance to avoid credit risk.
This paper is differentiated from previous researches in the points of the approach, which considers the characteristics of transaction procedures in the international transaction of digital goods, verification of appropriateness of the existing payment systems, and presentation of alternatives rather than acceptance or protection by law from conventional studies.
Korea has been at the forefront of the IT industry, particularly in such fields as digital content and the Internet. For Korea to maintain its export competitiveness and maximize its economic effectiveness, it is recommended that appropriate payment systems be presented for the practical business fields. In line with this, in-depth reviews on the economic feasibility and the legal, systemic validation of the payment systems presented in this study should be conducted in subsequent studies. I emphasize the fact that more appropriate alternatives than the systems presented in the study should also be continuously studied and reviewed.
