This thesis reviews the characteristics, structure and the resources used for the Dictionary of Archaic Words of Korean Manuscripts and focuses on its use with regard to reading translated ancient Korean Novels. The dictionary is distinct in the way it has been compiled : It contains a wealth of material uncollected in the previous dictionaries, including proper nouns, extant words and Chinese words. It also lays out original Chinese texts in parallel with the translated passages.
With the entries of 70,000, more than 180,000 examples and over 6,000 pages, the Dictionary of Archaic Words of Korean Manuscripts will serves as a guide for basic research on numerous areas of studyt as well as students of Korean studies. It will also help one to more easily read ancient Korean novels written in Chosun dynasty.
This dictionary has not complied with the current dictionary publication method of resorting to a corpus but opted for the traditional manual work. Which accounts for fewer examples of more frequently used words and more examples of less frequently used words. Its head words are mostly composed of nouns, verbs and adjectives. Suffixes and conjugated endings have been given a short shrift. Solace may be found in the knowledge that this is a interim byproduct in the course of compiling the Ancient Korean Dictionary.
