Humor is an aesthetic attitude which is soaked into all korean ethnic customs. For example, at korean funeral rites it is common that visitors would rather laugh than mourn. They think that laughing erases tears and cures pains.
So it is natural that these attitudes are reflected in korean folk arts, including Masque dance(Talchum), Chang, Korean genre pictures. And I tried in this article to prove that these arts are based on humorous attitudes. But it is undeniable that these humorous attitudes have grown up under tragic circumstances from which korean people could not escape. So laughing and humor have been a sort of wisdom to overcome those difficulties.
In the similar context M. Bachtin called these humorous attitudes as a ‘folk humor’. So I used this concept to analyze korean folk arts. And Bachtin’s concept ‘folk humor’ was very useful for searching humorous characters of korean folk arts.
