This paper explores the large amount of Korean-English code switching (CS) data collected by the author for about twenty years from the same subjects starting from their early childhood through their twenties and discusses meaningful CS utterances and tokens with four language corpora which are divided according to their developmental language activities. No study has ever dealt with CS forms of such a long period of time. It follows that there is some discrepancy between the childhood/adolescent bilinguality and adulthood bilinguality in respect to the occurrence and frequency of CS forms and tokens involving system morphemes, which are discussed in detail along with their morphosyntactic characteristics. This fact renders the general rule on CS, Switch-alpha (Choi, 1991) modified to meet the bilinguality condition on CS as presented in the paper. The underlying assumption on the general rule is the specific-language-pair-grid and particular-language-pair integrity. So long as the grid and integrity as well as the bilinguality condition are not violated, any linguistic element can be switched in contact language situations. Switch-alpha is assumed to be determined not by a specific rule, but results from the interaction of other factors such as morphological properties and syntactic/semantic features of the languages involved. Discussing two kinds of CS data, it attests that spontaneous or impromptu utterances contain more system morphemes than conscious or descriptive ones.
