Wordplay translation has been regarded as one of the most restricted forms of translation. Some scholars dismissed wordplay as untranslatable and others insist that only professional translators can effectively translate wordplay. However, trainee translators are also able to translate wordplay in amanner that is stylistically and conceptually appropriate. This paper proposes an SAT (Speech Acts Theory)-based model that one can employ to translate wordplay. To explore the possibility that this criterion will be applied in practice, the author instructed 23 students to translate 14 newspaper headlines which contain various forms of wordplay. A close analysis of their wordplay translations finds that the novice translators are capable of translating wordplay and that some of them translate wordplay with emphasis on speech acts.
