Recently the art activities of Jeong Hyeonung(鄭玄雄, 1911-1976) who defected to North Korea have become known through various channels. This paper aims to examine Jeong Hyunung’s artworks under the socialist art structure of North Korea in the 1950s~60s. The development of the post-war North Korean art can be considered a process of constructing a socialist national culture. The art policy of the Kim Il-Sung regime branched out in two directions, namely, “preservation of cultural heritage” and “succession and development in the area of creation.” The former includes the museum policies, the preservation and restoration work as well as establishing the logical structure of Joseon art history. The latter includes the direction of the creative works of Joseon Artist Alliance(朝鮮美術家東盟) and the construction of Juche realism(主體寫實主義) art theory. Of the artists who defected to North Korea, Kim Yongjun(金瑢俊, 1904-1967), Yi Yeoseong(李如星, 1901- ?) and Jeong Hyeonung were involved in both types of activities. But whereas Kim Yongjun and Yi Yeoseong leaned toward theoretical work, Jung took part in more diverse activities, from the work of copying ancient Goguryeo murals to writing on art history and to creative work in areas such as illustration art and Joseonhwa(朝鮮畵). In particular, the role played by Jeong in revitalizing the graphic field provides a point of connection that can link the pre-liberation period with the post-liberation period from the aspect of Korean design history. In this paper, the artworks of Jung are examined by differentiating them into two classes, the Goguryeo mural copy works and the works as the chairman of the Graphic Art Committee. This will provide an opportunity to examine the ways in which an artist who defected to North Korea responded to being mobilized in the construction of a socialist national culture as well as explore the conflicts in which the artist found himself.
