Since it has been conceived as a type of architecture, the library has act as a messenger of knowledge and the means of education, research, preservation and rent. On the other hand, through the history of architecture, the library architecture has been developed constantly and it has represented the change of socio-cultural need. The contemporary era is basically identified as a time of social and cultural change in the field of not only social science but also the built environment. Through this process, the main issue which transforms the main characteristics of library architecture is the changing relationship between knowledge, space and its users.
The architectural shape, spatial characteristics and the sociocultural meaning of the Sejong National Library represents the diversity of contemporary culture and various needs of users. From the conceptual design phase of the design competition for the Sejong National Library, with an analog form, it was intended as a library which contained digital contents as well as comprised human’s emotion. The changing objectives from object-centered space to the user-centered space of the library have been represented to the external shape as well as the interior spaces.
This paradigm shift to recognition of the significance of the socio-cultural quality of space has led to a focusing on the sustainable architectural and urban development patterns. Furthermore, the new design have also directly and indirectly caused a great deal of change in terms of not only urban and but also its interpretations. In order to achieve the significant role as a city Brand Identity (BI) for Sejong City, the design of the Library act as a significant dynamic and symbolic icon within the new city.
As a cultural container, the library architecture communicates between knowledge and space and visitors may interprite the change of its meaning. In the Library, the building’s spatial structure provides the possibility of diverse experience allowing visitors to access the reading spaces. This diversity is the result of multiple connections of spaces horizontally and vertically. This spatial configuration is achieved by a clear spatial structure giving the layout coherence while at the same time creating a varied experience.
While the spatial structure provides visitors diverse experience, the inter-connected internal and external spaces ensure that visitors constantly restructure their spatial experience. In other words, due to the inter-relationship between internal and external spaces as well as the presence of the huge lobby space and the connection between it and reading space and children’s reading room, visitors can retain their various spatial experiences without losing the overall picture of the spatial structure. In the spatial structure, this is evident through a clear circulation structure and visual relationship between the inner and outer spaces.
A new understanding of space developed by a functional and scientific approach or a science of space is challenging urban space as well as architectural space. Today, the great attention of culture is integrated into the rediscovery of the notion of space, which shifted from space as a physical container to space as a socio-cultural container.
