Luke 10:38-42 has been traditionally interpreted as a passage where two different personal types are contrasted with each other. That is, Martha represents the type who is absorbed in the worldly concerns ("you are worried and troubled about many things"), while Mary represents the type who is searching for spiritual truth ("but one thing is necessary"), and the focus of this story is to urge Christians to strive only for matters of God like Mary. This article attempts to prove that such dualistic interpretation is incorrect with due regard to the textual criticism in Luke 10:41- 42, especially v.42a. The best text is offered by n B C² etc., where the Text reads: "few things are necessary, or one." According to this text Jesus does not contrast "many things" with "one thing necessary " in terms of symbolic meaning, but he only makes it clear that many kinds of food are not necessary but only few dishes or one. If so, the key of interpreting the episode does not rest on vv. 41- 42a but on v.42b ("Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her"). Jesus declares here that the choice of Mary is her unique right and that it should not be taken away. The statement of Jesus assures that the right of women is not confined to her traditional role, and it reflects the mind of Jesus toward the sexual equality, which is without parallel in that patriarchal time.
