The Benedictine Abbey at Deokwon(Wonsan in Hamgyeongnam-do) was the second monastery of St. Ottilien Abbey in Korea. It has been being evaluated as successful model of Missions, Monastic life and Architecture in the Benedictine Missionary monasteries. But it was heavily damaged during the Korean war and the site has been changed by using as Wonsan Agricultural University. So we can not know how it keeps the original shape, and it is very difficult to find the accurate site planning, scale and architectural style of the monastery.
Recently the accurate picture material and document was found, and new research on the abbey was studied. So I can get into close with the original site planning and architectural style.
In this study, I tried to conjecture the original form of the old Deokwon abbey(the location, arrangement, size, architectural style). I have drawn those by CAD.
The results of this study are as follows :
First, The Deokwon Abbey which was built by the model of ‘Hirsau Abbey’ was the center of pastoral ministry for the Apostolic Vicariate of Wonsan, and a small city which was equipped with church, seminary, accommodation, garden grove, barn, carpenter shop, ironworks, print shop, mill etc.
Second, The buildings of the Deokwon Abbey were the typical Romanesque buildings comparing with the Gothic buildings which were built by the initiative of the French missionaries. And it was a functional layout and spatial configuration.
Third, The Culture Factors that could leave a large footprint in the arts and culture were those the Benedictine missionaries which inherited the tradition of the Beuron Abbey have not experienced persecution, and researched Korean traditional culture. Also there were many scholars and experts among them.
Fourth, The Deokwon Abbey building (including church) was 4-story building(total floor area : 4,854.45㎡), and the seminary was 3-story building of the H-plane(total floor area : 2,720㎡).
