This research investigated the characteristics of bad man and the meaning of evil in「Songsagongdaeryogeumhonjang(宋四公大鬧禁魂張)」, volume 36 of 『Yusemyeongeon(喩世明言)』from various angles. The representative bad men in the work are ‘Songsagong(宋四公)’ and ‘Jojeong (趙正).’ The are all cunning and untrustworthy, with no morality. Nevertheless they have talent and carefulness in stealing, however they showed contrast in the process of expressing skillfulness and pride while spreading such skill. This way, the common characteristics that appear in two characters" personality, who are similar at the same time different are ‘strangeness(奇異)’, ‘humor(諧謔)’, ‘plot(智謀)’, ‘cold-heartedness(非情)’, ‘righteousness(俠義)’, etc. When investigating the characteristics that relatively clearly appeared mainly with the story development of the work, they can be divided into ‘strangeness and eccentricity’, ‘humor and wit’, ‘resourcefulness and scheme.’ In this work, characteristic of evil was based on the point that the writer, the work, and the reader are related to each other, which was materialized mainly through the characters(bad men) in the work. When investigating the meaning of "evil" through bad men, first, expression of personal psychology. Period disobedience or antigovernment consciousness are such case. Second, expression of human desire, which are loss of rationality, attraction to primitive instinct, disclosure of impulse and violence. Third, the expression of the actual situation, which can be said to the realization of actual social phenomenon. This work has considerably unique content, which avoided the traditional story structure where evil men are punished or fail, also, escaped from the existing character composition. Accordingly, this work shows different characteristics from the existing works in various aspects, e.g. human existence and cognition, psychology of the public of that time and influence, writer and reader, and view on the period and the society, besides the novel structure, content, and meaning. This research provides not only the shortcut to understand the characters of the work, but also provides important meaning to have an insight into the composition of the work and minutely comprehend the story and conflict theme. Furthermore, such exploration enables the readers as well as us to think more freely by escaping from pressure toward "goodness(善)’ and oppression, also, view the bad men and meaning of evil with more various and in-depth sight.
