In the past the Korean-Chinese music culture was mainly affected by the North Korea, and most of the Korean-Chinese national instruments are developed and improved, the result is that most of the Korean-Chinese folk music lost their traditions. However, one of the Korean-Chinese national instrument-Janggu(장구) keeps its original form, and almost most Korean-Chinese are using it in their music. The purpose of this study is to review the terms of the way to play the execution and rhythm of Janggu, and I will explain the difference with the example of mix-rhythm.
In the current, if we compare the Korean-Chinese folk music of the Janggu and the way to play execution with the South Korea on terms, despite the usage of the same terms, we could find that there is a spatial and temporal differences due to the long periods of discommunication. As a result of this comparative analysis, it can be summarized as below.
First, because the Korean-Chinese do not play the court music-and music called Jeongak(正樂), and the music associated with playing music tune, the performance related with the equipment is extinguished.
Second, there is the differences in terminology on using the Janggu execution between Korean-Chinese and south Korean, and the way to play the equipment and the Janggu execution is also different. the structure of the Korean-Chinese is almost the same as the South Korean, but there is a difference between terminology. For example, South Korean’s dongsalpuri Jangdan(동살푸리 장단) is used as ‘anddang Jangdan(안땅 장단)’.
Third, Korean-Chinese mixed us the two kinds of rhythm called “mixed rhythm”. And Korean-Chinese wants to pursue the changes of rhythm through this mixed rhythm, and it is their unique feature.
The above four different features are my conclusion on Janggu rhythm between Korean-Chinese and South Korean.
