ChunSeong Noh Ja-Young’s literary works have not drawn much attention from the existing studies regarding the early 1920s literature, and even have been evaluated negatively for sentimental Romanticism and Decadence. He had been actively involved in various literary activities through SeoGwang, Seoul, and HakSaengGye before he participated in the literary coterie magazines such as ChangJo, JangMiChon, and BaekJo, so his literary works should be reviewed with various literature source. This study intends to examine his literary works, specially focusing on those from SeoGwang, Seoul, and HakSaengGye, thereby discovering his newly literary characteristics associated with the feature of the magazines and revealing viewpoints the previous studies have not sufficiently addressed. Especially, the study mostly focuses on “seeking for utopia” in that it coincides closely with widespread discussion of “community” in those literary world, reflecting “awareness of life” rooted in the rhetoric of Christianity and Anarchism, rather than merely the output of Romanticism.
Although Noh Ja-Young introduced many different strands of thought obtained from various publishing activities, his introduction of the Theory of Evolution and Anarchism is presumed to result from his in-depth explorations reflecting the reality of the Joseon Dynasty, in accordance with the purpose of these magazines. Through a series of his early 1920s poems published by HakSaengGye, he embodied the theme of “seeking for utopia” like “paradise” by escaping from the reality described as “ruins”. The rhetoric of Christianity like “paradise” was adopted to show “awareness of life” towards “utopia”. At the same time, he made considerable efforts to find ideal community with the anarchist principle of reciprocity and mutual aid, thereby providing an alternative to overcome the reality of those period. Furthermore, further discussion is necessary in that his approach is in accordance with the prevailing tendency to search for the concept of “community” depending on the relationship between individual and society. In conclusion, we anticipate that his literary works need to be re-evaluated and reinterpreted with the context of his era’s thought and ideology, rather than being judged and criticized as Romanticism.
