This study is to consider foreign intellects who moved to Pohang in Chosun era, and to examine subsequent changes and responses of Pohang’s native culture. It is also possible to do similar studies on Silla or Goryeo era, but there is limitation that there’s too little information about such eras to conduct specific examinations. Also, about changes after industrialization, separate studies in different aspect should be done. In addition, it is considered needed to conduct study on other non-intellect foreign incomers, but this paper do not cover them since there is not enough information about them and such study has to be done in different and separate aspect. According to papers studying attitudes of native elites toward foreign elites, native party possesses four strategy toward foreign party; exclusion, embracement, mutual avoidance, and conflict. However, this classification is based on modern dynamics, thus it might not perfectly correlate with traditional society. Since this study aims to trace communion with foreign intellects, I examined actual cases with categories of "mutual avoidance, mutual embracement, and mutual development".
When the social class gap between natives and foreigners was huge, they tended to mutually avoid each other. This situation happened when foreigners did not understand natives’ lives, or when natives kept distance to foreigners.
However, newly appointed government officials tried to embrace the native culture. They communed with native people and shared culture with local community leaders. Native people also tended to acknowledge them as people of pow er and ability.
There were also some exiles who sympathized and understood natives’ lives. For instance, Dasan composed pieces observing and depicting everyday lives of local native people, and natives approached to this lonely exile w ith feelings of consolidation.
There were other cases of productive communion between foreign intellects and natives. In the case of Yeohun, he named local landscapes and composed pieces about them. His pupils and descendants studied and lengthened his works to accumulate rich cultural heritages.
In the most creative cases, foreign intellects respected and educated local figures, and natives admired foreign intellects to descend and develop their culture. Such reproduced culture assimilated with traditional culture to constitute cultural assets of local community.
Pohang is originally a region w here natives and foreign intellects’ relationship is important. Seeking community’s development through mutual acknowledgement and respect will lead to Pohang"s future oriented feature.
