Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the nursing student experiences of gerontological nursing practicum at elderly care facilities. Methods: The participants of this study were 74 nursing students in their sophomore year of college. Reflective journals were collected from all participants after practicing 45 hours of gerontological nursing practicum at elderly care facilities. Data were analyzed using the qualitative thematic analysis method suggested by Braun and Clarke. Results: Four common themes were observed from the collected significant statements: Experience of 1) difficulties and internal conflicts, 2) empathy and understanding, 3) expanded recognition, and 4) reflection and growth. Conclusion: The above findings provides an understanding of the nursing student experiences of gerontological nursing practicum at elderly care facilities. This result may be helpful for improving the nursing practical curriculum for gerontological practice.
