This study looks into two different medical student groups over the 3 year period to compare the results to examine whether having more mock tests prior to the standardized TOEIC tests enhances their scores. Their final TOEIC scores were compared upon administering five mock test for one group, and three for the other group. The students were interviewed to learn of their motivation to study the TOEIC. The 5-mock-test group scored the average of 838 on the final test, increase of 16 points from 822, whereas the 3-mock-test group showed 872, increase of 39 points from 833. These results show that the number of mock tests does not reveal any correlation with the test scores. Through interviews with the students, it was learned that they were externally motivated by their parents’ expectations toward them, chances to go abroad, and financial rewards upon good scores.
