This paper investigated Korean EFL students’ production of American English vowels /i, ɪ, ɛ, æ, ɑ, ɔ, ʊ, u, ʌ/ in hVd forms. The production of 24 students in an experimental group and that of 13 students in a control group were acoustically analyzed. In the pretest both groups of Korean students showed significant differences from native American speakers for the so-called new English vowels /ɪ, æ, ɑ, ɔ, ʊ/mainly in the F1 values related to the tongue height rather than in the F2 values related to the tongue frontness. As for the acoustic distance between vowel contrasts, the distance of the English pairs /i-ɪ/, /u-ʊ/, and /ɛ-æ/ in both groups was much shorter compared to the native speakers, indicating that Korean students did not distinguish the English pairs in production. In the posttest the production of the experimental group showed improvement in the F1 values of /ɪ/ and /ɑ/. On the other hand, the production of the control group did not show improvement. Also, the acoustic distance of /ɛ-æ/ and /u-ʊ/ approximated to that of the native speakers only in the experimental group. Based on the results, theoretical and pedagogical implications were discussed.
