This study investigated the use of communication and participation as teaching methods in the education of pre-service early childhood teachers. Specifically, the study examined the aspects of the instruction that they found meaningful and its effects on their ego-resilience. The implications of the findings are presented for instructors, suggesting that change in instructional methods can change the learner``s learning environment. The participants were 34 second-year undergraduate students enrolled in the early childhood education program at ‘S’ University during the spring semester of 2015. To bring in the elements of communication and participation, class activities included presentations, notemaking, and SNS including the Naver Band group communication app Pingpong participant response app. Data were collected and analyzed as from participants`` reflections on note-making through smartphone apps and SNSs, reflective journals giving feedback on the teaching style, and pre- and post-tests of ego-resilience. In the data analysis, the elements that were identified by the participants as meaningful aspects of communication and participation as teaching methods were examined. Four significant factors emerged, with participants describing the class style as ‘enjoyable, wanting it to continue’, ‘fostering growth through challenge’, ‘making participants into autonomous learners’ and ‘providing communication to look forward to’. In addition, statistically significant gains were found in pre- and post-tests of ego-resilience. The results suggest that applying teaching methods utilizing communication and participation can be beneficial for instructors wishing to revitalize their instruction.
