The purpose of this study, is to examine how magnet play activities change young children's utilization of science process skills and young children's utilization by the components of science process skills through the qualitative method.
The research questions of this study are as follows.
Do magnet play activities change young children's scientific inquiry abilities?
The participants for this study were 5 young children of age 5 and 1 young child of age 4 in a public kindergarten, located at Cgun, Gyeongsangnam-do.
This study designed magnet play activities on the basis of the textbook in the third grade of elementary school, and conducted magnet play activities at the total of 36 times twice a week during the total of 18 weeks from the third week of March to the third week of July, 2006.
In order to identify the changes of young children's inquiry skills through magnet play activities, this study analyzed the transcripts of video tape recording materials, teacher journals, observation records, and the observation records of young children, along with the continuous observation. The references of scientific inquiry ability, which were used for data analysis, included observing, predicting, communicating, experimenting, inferring, and creating.
The results of this study are as follows.
The utilization by the components of science process skills has shown diverse changes, such as magnet play activities positively changed young children's scientific inquiry ability.
