The goal of this study is to redetermine a meaning of text in Chinese-Western cultural contact through an analysis of a text for ‘Zhang yuan liang you xiang lun, 1819’ created by William Milne in Malacca.
Creation of ‘Zhang yuan liang you xiang lun’ was a work having the most popular appeal and the strongest spread effect among missionary business undertaken by Milne in the East Asia and China. While being concerned over diversified missionary modes, he created a novel that may explain Christian doctrine as a pamphlet type that could be most readily accepted by local Malacca overseas Chinese and Chinese and this became the first Chinese Christian novel.
Status of ‘Zhang yuan liang you xiang lun’ like this has been acknowledged even in Chinese novel history so far and that this novel spread Christian doctrine through Chinese language for the first time in China has been accepted as the most significant meaning of this novel.
However, this study intended to focus on conversation strategy in cultural contact, mutual understanding mode for the culture and self regulating process of knowledge by newly discovering a status as a venue of East-West cultural contact involved in this novel.
Furthermore, meaning of cultural cross between East-West value concept being occurred in this text was intended to be analyzed.
While analyzing what kind of Christian contents and facts western Christian missionaries spread to Chinese was the main stream of existing study, in this study, psychological change that is taken place in inner side of main principal in two-way rather than one way under the act of transmission and receiving, that is, complicated inner conscious dynamics and mutual interlocking being exposed in cultural contact was mphasized.
In this study, through conversation mode of characters being demonstrated and symbolized in detail by ‘Zhang yuan liang you xiang lun’, how those characters understood and persuaded their counterparts was superficially emphasized but how their own knowledge and cultural concept ran counter to and compared with cultural concept of counterparts and how it should be defined for persuasion in all the stages of its hidden side are considered to be the main concern of this novel.
A research on this inner trace shall be discovered and re-analyzed through in-depth reading of the text and therefore, fundamental attempt of this study was also focused on reviewing trace of localization movement and its two-way effect existed in ‘Zhang yuan liang you xiang lun’.
