The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural items of Korean textbooks to find an efficient way of selecting the cultural items and of presenting the cultural contents in Korean textbooks.
The need for cultural education in Korean language education is increasing with the significant increase in the number of the Korean language learners. Although this need is prevalent, it is still not enough to learn about Korean culture from current Korean textbooks because there is not an approved standard to select the cultural items and the educational method for the cultural contents.
This study tries to examine how Korean cultural education is going by extracting cultural items from reading and listening texts and the "Culture" columns of Korean textbooks of intermediate level and to find an efficient way of selecting the cultural items and of presenting the cultural contents in Korean textbooks. The result suggests some points to be modified or improved in Korean cultural education.
This study is significant as it recognizes the importance of cultural education in Korean language education and attempts to find an efficient way for Korean cultural education by analyzing the vast real-world data.
The result of this study is expected to provide information on anticipated future studies in Korean cultural education for proficient communication in the Korean language. Another expectation is that there will be many other studies in Korean cultural education focused on various subjects such as how to select the essential items of Korean culture and how to teach the detail items.

최근 한국어 학습자의 수가 크게 증가하면서 한국의 언어뿐만 아니라 한국문화 교육에 관한 학습자의 요구도 높아지고 있다. 또한 언어교육의 목표가 의사소통능력 중심으로 논의되는 추세에 따라 의사소통능력에 필수적인 ‘문화 이해 능력(cultural literacy)’ 개념이 중요하게 인식되면서 한국어교육 분야에서도 문화교육의 필요성 및 중요성에 관한 인식이 더욱 확대되고 있다. 이에 따라 한국어 교재에 제시되는 한국문화 교육 내용 역시 이전에 비해 적극적인 양상을 띠게 되었으며, 한국문화 교육의 정체성 및 필요성에 관한 연구가 활발하게 이루어지게 되었다.
그러나 한국문화 교육의 구체적인 방법론 구안에 필요한 문화 항목 선정 및 교육 내용 제시에 관한 일련의 연구는 아직 일관된 기준을 갖지 못한 상황에서 다소 자의적인 시각에서의 연구물 축적에 머물러 있던 면이 있었다. 이후 2010년부터 문화체육관광부와 국립국어원 주관으로 ‘한국어 확산 문화프로그램 보고서’ 및 ‘국제 통용 한국어교육 표준 모형 개발’ 연구가 이어지면서 한국문화 항목 선정 및 분류의 체계화 작업이 본격적으로 이루어지게 되었으며, 이를 토대로 한국문화 교육에 관한 연구는 더욱 구체화, 다양화되고 있는 시점이다.
이에 본 연구에서는 현재 주로 대학기관별로 발간되고 있는 한국어 교재에 제시된 문화 항목을 유형별, 내용별로 분류, 분석하였다. ‘국제 통용 한국어교육 표준 모형 개발 2단계’ 연구의 문화 항목 분류를 바탕으로 중급 한국어 교재의 읽기/듣기 텍스트와 ‘문화란’에 제시된 문화 항목의 제시 현황 및 체계화 정도를 살펴 한국어 교재의 문화 항목 선정 및 내용 제시 방식의 보완점 및 개선점을 모색하였다.
본 연구의 결과는 최근 관심과 중요성이 높아지고 있는 한국문화 교육에 관하여 실제 자료 분석을 바탕으로 문화 항목의 분류 및 항목별 내용 제시방식을 점검하고 개선점을 제시하였다는 데에 의의가 있다. 앞으로 국내에서 발간된 교재뿐 아니라 국외에서 발간된 교재에 이르기까지 다양한 한국어 교재를 대상으로 한 체계적인 분석과 폭넓은 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.
