The intention of this study is to explore the possibility of RST in contributing to diagnosing the meaning construction ability of learners. The extent factors used to diagnose the ability of meaning construction were examined through RST analysis and the result of learner text analysis revealed the following.
First, the various information composing a text do not retain identical values. Identifying whether or not a writer acknowledges the nucleus and satellite ideas according to their intentions and context can be the primary point in discerning the meaning construction ability of that writer. Second, various meaning relations can be adequately utilized to diagnose the writer"s ability to create context from various angles and connect them to effectively achieve his or her intentions. Third, by conducting a macrostructure analysis on the learner"s text, a detailed diagnosis can be provided including the unity of the text, organic links between individual sentences and paragraphs, and the writer"s unique discussion strategy.
As illustrated above, RST may provide critical information and data, in developmental aspect, in diagnosing and improving the ability of meaning construction of learners.
