This study attempted to investigate the formative process, content and meaning of the old-age policy, an important keyword in relation to the Confucian politics of the Goryeo Dynasty.
The findings of this study was as follows:
King Taejo called Gyenhyeon and Seonpil the respected person or Sangbu, in the process of getting Later Three Kingdoms unified. This was related to the method of giving preferential treatment to the respected elderly of virtue mentioned in the 『Book of Odes』or 『Mencius』. "Giving preferential treatment to the elderly" was due to symbolism as the attitude that the monarch could perform it as a virtuous person. In his reigning period, King Seongjong prepared for the ceremony of resignation for people in their 70s on a full scale and began to implement the policy of providing goods for the elderly in their 80s or older. In the ceremony of giving the present to the elderly or Roinsaseoleui, the king personally held the banquet for old government dignitaries or old commoners in Hapmun and Dongrakjeong of the palace. The group of the elderly present at this ceremony included both old government dignitaries and women invested with the titles of nobility, male and female elderly persons with and without jobs and monks who were all in their 80s or older, which indicates that it had an aspect that both monarch and subject shared their joy with each other. The old-age policy had the symbolic aspect of Confucian enlightenment as it gave preferential treatment to old government dignitaries and supported the elderly with the politics of virtue, benevolence and righteousness. This illustrates that the Goryeo Dynasty came to fruition in organizing Confucian political culture.
