This paper attempts to provide a force-dynamic account of English modal auxiliary verbs that can cover the possible interpretation ranges of the modal verbs. This approach is an extension of Talmy"s (1988) idea that there are certain forces identifiable in the semantic analysis of lexical or phrasal categories. It is suggested that modality can be viewed and analyzed in a principled and realistic way by adopting the force-dynamic perspective while capturing the semantic and pragmatic diversities of modal auxiliaries in English. It will be shown that Talmy"s force-dynamic notion can be extended to the pragmatic domain in the sense that the speaker"s knowledge or any contextual clue can act as a force that legitimizes the strength level of the utterance. This paper naturally finds that English modal verbs crucially involve pragmatic factors such as background knowledge of the interlocutors and the judgement on the part of the speaker. The analysis of can, may and must in this paper will reveal that the core meaning of the modal verbs and its pragmatic instantiation can be captured within the force-dynamic approach while it takes care of detailed aspects of forces in different domains, their strength levels and the directions in which they apply.
